From a decorator’s standpoint, one of the major ways to tie the look of a room together is through the creative use of window treatments. The type of coverings to put over windows, sliding glass doors, and other openings is often an afterthought, and once installed, may stay there for years.

Window treatments are not only decorative, they can also help make your home more energy efficient by keeping in the heat during the cold winter months and repelling the sun in the summer. Isn’t saving money what it’s all about?

Take a walk around your home and make note of what is currently on your windows.

Do you have curtains, drapes, shades, or shutters?

What type of construction are they?

From what direction does the sun shine into your windows?

These are all factors to take into consideration when choosing windows coverings.

Table Runners

In the event you would like a nice new valance for your window, you could choose to make it yourself. In making a valance you need a piece of fabric, and a handy place to find a piece of fabric is in the table cloth section of a home furnishing, department or even dime store.

Tips

Here are some helpful tips for you to follow when making your window treatments.

  • Table runners can be nubby, printed or solid fabrics.
  • Table runners should be from two to three times the same length as the window is wide, for fullness. This pattern should take about two runners for most windows. Table runners tend to be from 14 inches long and 72 inches wide to 14 inches long and 90 inches wide, if it is only 36 inches wide you need to get four. Windows are usually from 36 inches wide to 54 inches wide.
  • You can simply leave the bottom edge since it is finished already or fold it twice and hem. If you leave the edge you can use a trim or rick rack tape for decoration. Be sure to purchase the same amount for the edging as the table runners length plus at least three more inches for folding under on the ends.
  • Be sure to select fabric for this project, since there is some sewing, other things like bamboo or shells, etc. can not be sewn or glued effectively.
