How to Draw a Floor Plan
![]() High Tech Interior Design |
In order to complete any type of project, one must know the basics to begin the task, and the task at hand is to design the interior of a room.
The very first step is to record the dimensions of the room you will be working with. Having a general visual of what the room looks like and knowing its shape is a great starting point, that way you will be able to recognize any problems that you may want to consider before beginning the job.
If you come to the realization that the room that you are working with does in fact have some defects, such as being too narrow or not having a focal point, it may be wise to evaluate the situation now rather than waiting until later.
This will enable you to have a better understanding of your interior design goals.
Some questions you may want to ask yourself when evaluating the room are:
What are this room’s assets?
Does it have elegant molding, a rustic fireplace?
Drawing a Floor Plan
As soon as you have a good grasp of the room which you will be designing you can finally get started on your project.
You must first draw out a floor plan. A great tool to use when drawing is a ruler so you can indicate doors, windows, floors, and any other static objects. These objects must be expressed clearly because your design will depend on their locations.
You may want to make a list of your movable items, basically, your furniture.
The floor plan serves a large purpose and that is to help you visualize the future locations of you furniture, how many pieces of furniture will fit into your room, and where the traffic paths need to be. The floor plan is not meant to disclose any other details, such as your room’s personality or the height of its walls.
Choose Your Furniture by Size and Color
Another important rule of thumb is that if you have low ceilings, low profile furniture is the best way to go. Sofas and chairs with low backs would be ideal for this type of setting. For personal comfort, seat back height should be closer to your shoulders than to your waist. This may be useful information if any of you are a tall.
It is important to take into perspective, the colors and furniture arrangements that would suit your room the best.
If you want a smaller and cozier feeling to your room, warm, dark, matte colors not only give you this type of feeling, but they also advance living space.
Arranging Furniture
On long and narrow rooms, you can use these warm colors to pull shorter walls forward and make the room feel squarer. If your room has an awkward shape, or a lot of built-in obstructions, or an off-center focal point, you may want to arrange your furniture in a way that it visually divides your room into a collection of virtual rooms which will be easier to manage.
Remember, you do not have to place all your furniture against the walls.
If you have a fireplace, a nice arrangement would be to cluster your seating around it to give it a homely feel.
Creating a group of some nice plants, a chaise, and a desk or piano in another area of the room would be a great balance that furniture array.
Area rugs are a great tool to use to enhance definition.
Emphasize a Unique Look and Feel
If your room has a particularly attractive feature, such as a picture window, let it be the focal point, or what you glance at first upon entering by making it the most colorful or elegant feature in the room and/or centering your furniture array around it.
Select window treatments that will highly your theme. If you have a bright fluffy theme, you might want to choose white billowing curtains. For those that have a hard darker theme, maybe wood window blinds would suit you best.
