The Top Ten Keys to Maintain Your Home This Spring
![]() Home Maintenance |
Spring is here and it’s time to do some spring cleaning!
The home is more than your nest - it’s your nest egg. With as much money as people use to buy a house it’s surprising how many will not make one time a year to completely clean and maintain their investments.
Maintenance is a hassle, but the end result is a savings of thousands of dollars, as the little repairs prevent big problems.
Clear out one full weekend and use these top ten, most important repairs to get going on your spring cleaning at home.
By doing this you will save yourself time and money in the long run, and you will feel great about the productive use of your time.
Top 10 Home Maintenance Tips
- Clean out your gutters.
Get out any leftover leaves, and check that it’s draining at least two feet away from your house.
- Check your roof.
On the next rainy day, check for dark spots on your attic ceiling, near vents, around chimneys, and skylights if you are lucky enough to have them. Scope out the roof for any flashing material or damaged shingles.
Ignoring a roof leak will mean the savings you put away for a rainy day will all go to uncomfortable roof repairs. You can catch this early and save yourself a bundle of money.
- Open your fireplace damper for improved air circulation to postpone turning on your air conditioner. This will save energy and keep the house cool.
When it does get warm enough to air condition, be sure you close the damper back again, before you turn it on.
- If you have a septic tank, get it checked and pumped.
- Clean and inspect the exterior.
Power wash outside and check your paint for any place that needs a touch up, especially if you have wood underneath. Exposed wood could rot, and you would have to replace the whole board.
If you need to replace some caulking, use a carpet knife to get the old caulk out, this works wonders.
- Cut back any foliage that’s grown over your roof, walls, air conditioning, etc.
While you are trimming back the trees, make sure all the leaves from autumn are off the lawn, so that your grass can grow.
- Change your air conditioning filter.
- Caulk cracks in bathroom tiling.
- Check doors and windows.
Feel around windows and doors for leaks and drafts. Seal these up to prevent mold. If you have removable storm windows, it’s time to take them out and replace them with screens. If you have the sliding glass doors in your home, check the horizontal track it slides on and clean out any debris that’s built up.
- Check all safety equipment.
Do a check over all the safety equipment in your house. If there are places in your home where a smoke alarm should be installed, this is the time to do it. Every smoke alarm should work, and should have the batteries changed. Check your fire extinguishers, and make sure they work.
When you are finished with these home maintenance issues, you will enjoy resting in your home, knowing that you can get through the season without unexpected repairs taking up your time and money.

How do you effect significant newness to your home without costing you an arm and a leg?
Well, the first things visitors notice when they enter a house, or any room for that matter, are the pictures on the walls. Framed art pieces are important features because a: they hang at eye level, and b: they convey the tastes of the homeowner.
But original art pieces are expensive. And unless you are a collector with spare cash and spare rooms to stow these treasures, they are not versatile compared to decorative arts posters - which are way more affordable - when it comes to adding new freshness to a home.
One other advantage of artwork posters, compared to original art pieces, is that you can happily direct a glow upon them (to feature them), without worrying about damaging them.
