What Are Venetian Blinds?

Windows can be covered in various ways - blinds, shades, shutters, and vertical blinds to name several. Perhaps the most common is the horizontal window blind, or as it is most commonly called, the Venetian blind.

Venetian Blinds

Patented in England in the 18th century and reportedly first installed in 1761 in St. Peter’s Church in Philadelphia, Venetian blinds offer several advantages over other window coverings. Like shades, they can be completely raised to allow access for opening or cleaning the window or letting in maximum light. Unlike traditional shades of cloth or other materials, however, Venetian blind slats can be tilted to direct or obscure light or even air into a space.

Venetian Blind Options

Once commonly made of aluminum, Venetian blinds are now available in vinyl or wood and are available in various colors that match or complement any decor. Blind slats can be of traditional width or mini-blind width that is less than half the width of a traditional slat.

Use with Smaller Windows

Venetian blinds are not, however, suitable for windows wider than about six feet. The traditionally corded lift mechanisms become increasingly difficult to operate as the width of the blinds increases.

Venetian Blind Maintenance

Many people think Venetian blind maintenance offsets their flexibility. The slats, which can be of varying front to back widths, tend to collect dust and need a cleaned once a year or more often, depending on the area where they are installed.

While it is possible to take the blinds down, completely disassemble them, and wash the slats one by one, this is a laborious process most folks would like to avoid. Using any of several tools available is far easier.

For example, sweeper adapters are available that feature multiple rows of brushes so you can vacuum several slats at once.

Alternatives to Venetian Blinds

If you are building a new house or replacing windows in your current abode, you can avoid the cleaning issue altogether by installing windows with horizontal blinds enclosed within them. Although costly, this approach eliminates the need to remove the blinds or vacuum them.

The disadvantage is that the blinds are at a fixed height from window top to bottom so you cannot raise or lower them. An alternative approach are windows with vertical slats that can be adjusted to a fully open position, for admitting as much light as possible; to a fully closed position, which excludes all light.

The Future of Venetian Blinds

Modern window technology may eliminate the need for blinds of any sort, but today these options are expensive and offer very few options when compared to venetian blinds. Instead of a window technology, we recommend using venetian blinds the way they were intended.
